Praying for Children in Custody

“I was a stranger and you invited me in . . . I was in prison and you came to visit me.” – Matthew 25:35-36

God calls us to pray for the migrant children stuck in Border Patrol. ICE, and health and Human Services custody . . . alone, afraid, and without their parents. Other children are stuck in jury-rigged camps, waiting in dangerous cities in Mexico for asylum hearing.

Why pray for these children?

  • God values them. He sees these children, knows them, and loves them. – Read Luke 18:16, Psalm 139
  • They are in spiritual danger. As they go through this trauma, they are in danger of feeling that God has abandoned them or does not love them. This could impact their souls for life.
  • Praying for children fosters compassion. We all have different opinions about who is to blame for this, and who to be angry at. If we pray rather than argue, we are brought to the heart of God.

Suggestions for prayer

  • Pray for their physical welfare and spiritual protection. Pray that they will be fed, get adequate sleep, and will feel God’s presence.
  • Pray scripture. Psalms provide cries of the heart (Psalms 68 and 88) and affirmation of his care (Psalms 23 and 139). God will guide you to others.
  • Pray for the staff of government facilities detaining children. Their work is likely discouraging and may pose spiritual dangers – the temptation to harden the soul to protect against the pain of compassion.
  • Pray with others. This makes prayer richer and more focused, and God blesses us when “two or three gather.” – Matthew 18:20

This information comes from a small group of Christians in Salt Lake City, UT, who are praying and who feel called to invite others to pray. Thank you!
