In an ever-changing world, the ONE thing that is constant at ALL SAINTS is our faith. Currently, faithful supply priests and Eucharistic lay ministers lead our worship services. This time of transition on our faith journey gives us an opportunity to reassess and recommit ourselves to the mission and the ministry of ALL SAINTS. This is what God has called the members of ALL SAINTS to be in this location, at this time in our lives.
Our PRESENT
OUR HISTORY
In 1925, three lots of land in the northern part of Detroit (now known as the University District) was purchased by the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan to extend the church’s mission. In 1926, several vestrymen from St. John’s Episcopal Church – Detroit sponsored a meeting at the residence of a member at 18305 Wildemere. Many other meetings were held during the winter and there is great interest. By the autumn of 1927, a decision was made to open a church school in the neighborhood. Classes were conducted in the wooden building of the Hampton Elementary School (now known as Palmer Park Academy), located near the lots the diocese purchased.
On Sunday, November 25, 1928, the cornerstone of the church building was laid, with the Rev. Herman Page, PhD, Bishop of the Diocese of Michigan, presiding at the ceremonies. Late in the summer of 1929, the first unit of ALL SAINTS was completed and equipped.
In August of 1929, The Rev. Dr. Berton S. Levering, Rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Ypsilanti, MI., became the Vicar of ALL SAINTS (mission) Church and installed as the first rector. On September 27, 1929, dedication ceremonies were conducted for the completed church building. Later on that year, ALL SAINTS “mission” Church assumed full parish status.
Soon after he assumed duties, he called an informal meeting of the women of the parish to consider an organization of female members only to assist the church. The name “All Saints League of Women” was chosen. This organization contributed greatly to the life of the parish. Today it continues as the Episcopal Church Women of All Saints.
Dr. Levering served for nearly 30 years, until his retirement in 1958. During his leadership, the parish enjoyed considerable growth in all areas. The church building was expanded, and added the undercroft in 1937, containing a dining area complete with kitchen, stage, classrooms, and a children’s chapel. Finally, a new sanctuary was built over the undercroft in 1950.
From 1958 to 1984, the Reverend Ralph W. Parks, succeeded Dr. Levering as our second rector. The parish continued to grow and parishioners revered him for his acceptance and adept heading of challenges that accompanied changes in the church and city during his ministry. He was also the Archdeacon in charge of Church Extension.
From 1985 to 1989, the Reverend Rollin B. Norris served as our third rector.
From 1989 to 1997, the Reverend Robert Bickley served as the Interim Priest along with supply priests and Deacon Jeffernell Howcott.
From 1997 to 2005, the Reverend T. Herbert Johnson served as the fourth and the first African-American rector.
From 2005 to 2008, the parish continued its ministry with lay leadership and supply clergy.
From 2008 to 2009, the Reverend Dr. Thomas W.O. Mayers served as our fifth rector.
From 2009 to 2012, the Reverend C. Alfred Loua served as our Priest-in-Charge.
From 2012 to 2022, we were served by several supply priests, primarily, the Rev. Christine Humphrey and the Rev. Peter Groschner.
On February 2022, the Rev. Anthony Estes was called as the Rector of All Saints.
We, as a parish continue to “Answer the Call to Spread Christ’s Ministry.”
