The Cathedral Church of St. Paul

We invite all clergy and lay to attend either service during Holy Week.
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Bonnie A. Perry, Bishop of the Diocese of Michigan, and The Rev. Dr. Donald Kreiss, Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Southeast Michigan Synod, invite you to a joint Chrism Mass & Clergy Renewal of Vows service on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.
For your convenience, there will be two joint in-person services.
- 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Plymouth
- 6:30 p.m. at The Cathedral of St. Paul, Detroit
REAFFIRMATION OF ORDINATION VOWS:
- In the Episcopal Church the ordained ministry is normally seen as a life-long vocation.
- Careful selection, discernment, and preparation are required before ordination takes place.
- The canons call for theological instruction in the Holy Scriptures; church history, including the ecumenical movement; Christian theology; Christian ethics and moral theology; studies in contemporary society, including racial and minority groups; liturgics and church music; and theory and practice of ministry.
- The requirements and standards of learning may be modified in the ordination of local priests and deacons.
- The BOS (Book of Occasional Services) provides a form for the Reaffirmation of Ordination Vows.
Please bring your own small clean container for chrism.
- A limited number of bottles will be available.
- Clergy do not need to vest.
CHRISM:
- Consecrated oil used for anointing the newly baptized person with the sign of the cross at baptism.
- At this consignation, the bishop or priest says to each newly baptized person that “you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in baptism and marked as Christ's own for ever” (BCP, p. 308).
- Chrism must be consecrated by a bishop.
- It may be consecrated immediately prior to the baptism.
- It may also be consecrated by the bishop on an episcopal visitation when there is no baptism, or at a diocesan service such as the Reaffirmation of Ordination Vows of the diocesan clerg
